If you are new to couponing you may have heard the word Catalina before, but you may think of Kraft’s salad dressing or maybe an island vacation destination. Well, you are wrong when it comes to the world of the coupon user.

The kind of Catalina we love is actually a printable coupon!
You know the small machines that are up at the register that spit out the rectangular coupons when you check out? The coupons they give you are called Catalinas, after the name of the company that services those machines. You can find these machines all over, includes stores like Walgreens, Kroger, Target and more. Sometimes the offers are for a certain percentage off at a totally different store, like the Catalina that is printing at Walgreens at the time we are writing this article for Fashion Bug. What is even better is when the Catalina is for a discount on a certain product or line of products.
The best kind? When it is for a FREE item with your next purchase! Target has been known to have this type of free Catalinas most often, in our personal experience.
When the Catalina prints, you can use it on your next purchase. Typically if you buy the item that prompted the Catalina to print, it will print again. This could go on and on, until the offer is eliminated by the Catalina company. Take for example a recent Target Catalina offer for candy bars. When you bought a certain brand of candy bar a Catalina spit out for a FREE candy bar of that same variety. If you take that Catalina coupon and check out again with another identical candy bar it will be FREE, plus you will receive another Catalina coupon for a free candy bar. Continue to repeat the process for as many times as you wish until the offer is pulled from the company.
Catalina coupons can be a great unexpected way to save additional dollars on your grocery items. Sometimes they are well publicized on coupon blogs and coupon forums like We Use Coupons. It’s helpful to know ahead of time what Catalina you can expect when you check out so you can better plan your purchases. If for instance you wanted to buy 9 boxes of cereal this week but you know ahead of time that Kroger (for example) has a “save $2 on your next purchase of XYZ brand cereal” Catalina coupon spitting out, you could wisely buy a couple boxes in your first transaction and get that Catalina. Then you could take that Catalina and use it on your 2nd transaction to buy more cereal and get another Catalina. And so on.
